A summery drink for summer reading

Here is a quick, simple, inexpensive cocktail that goes perfectly with summer reading. It’s from one of our favorite cookbooks, Super Natural Every Day by Heidi Swanson, who calls this “sangria’s dressed-down cousin.”

As part of our mission to support independent bookstores, we must point out that this can be made cheaply, in large quantities, and served at author events.

(Have you noticed that the audience Q&A is always a little livelier when wine is served?)

Tinto de Verano

Ice cubes
1 (750ml) bottle inexpensive Spanish red wine
Sparkling (naturally sweetened) lemonade or any not-too-sweet lemon-lime beverage
Fresh lemon slices

Fill each glass with as many ice cubes as will fit. Add ½ cup/120 ml wine and ½ cup/120 ml sparkling lemonade to one glass, then stir. Taste. It should be light and refreshing and not overly “juicy.” Sometimes the cheap wine you get here in the States is very concentrated and grape-y. If that is the case, you’ll need to dilute your tinto with a bit more sparkling lemonade. Fill the remaining glasses, stir, garnish with lemon slices, and serve.
