Hey Murakami Fans

Friday, November 18th, 2011

It’s not too late to raise your hand for a signed first edition of 1Q84 by entering our “Ten Things” contest. There were fewer than 300 of these signed books produced, and they feature different versions of the author’s autograph.

(Check it out: here are three Murakami fans at an opening night party in Brooklyn – each happy reader got a different version of the signed first edition.)

We’ve already gotten some great “Ten Things” contest submissions, and we’ve also gotten some desperate pleas for more time.

We get it. Rome wasn’t built in a day, War and Peace wasn’t written in a day, and 1Q84 can’t be read in a day. (Though actually if anyone thinks they CAN read 1Q84 in one day, that could be a whole other contest.) And super creative “Ten Things” lists can’t just be written at the drop of a hat.

So (drumroll please) we are officially extending the deadline for the “Ten Things Haruki Murakami Made Me Think Of” Contest until December 31st, 2011. Unplug the phone, kick off your shoes, pour yourself some sake, and write up an entry. If Santa doesn’t make you happy this holiday season, maybe Alfred A. Knopf can.

Full contest details are here, and as before please send all submissions to us at bluestone@randomhouse.com.

1Q84 cover

Introducing the “Ten Things Haruki Murakami Made Me Think Of” Contest, which is open to you and your customers, and yours to share via e-newsletters, Twitter, and your extremely interesting websites.

Because we know you’re dying to write this newsletter copy: “Win a free first edition of Haruki Murakami’s 1Q84, signed by the author!”

How it works: send us a “Top Ten List” inspired by Murakami’s writing, and we’ll post it here on Bluestone.

Sample ideas to get your creative juices flowing:

 *          10 jazz pieces you could actually listen to while running

*           10 writers that Murakami has not translated (but we wish he would)

*           10 film actors who would be great at playing Murakami characters

*           10 best cat names inspired by Murakami novels

Ten winners will be selected based on creativity, and the level to which we’re jealous we didn’t think of the idea ourselves. Each winner will receive a a signed first edition of 1Q84, published by Knopf.

(We don’t have to tell you the lengths a Murakami fan will go to for a signed book. When the galleys arrived, we were so nervous about them disappearing, we hid them where we thought no one would look: behind a 1961 etiquette guide.)

Please note: we promise not to collect any of your customers’ e-mail addresses for our own random-ish promotional purposes.

You can send your submissions to us at bluestone@randomhouse.com.  The deadline is December 31st and the fine print is here.

I’m Not Eligible But…

My dog Milo and I just so happen to be such big fans of Gary Shteyngart’s Super Sad True Love Story, we couldn’t resist kicking off The Super Happy Bookloving Dogs Contest ourselves! Of course, as a Random House employee, I’m not eligible to compete in the photo contest—but alas, a girl (and her pup) can dream.

But luckily for you, booksellers and their customers alike are eligible! And Gary might just name a dog in his next novel after you. Feel free to get creative—blog, tweet, hoot, and (the good old fashioned) converse about it—spread the word for all your friends and customers to participate!

Send us a photo of yourself with a dog reading Super Sad True Love Story to bluestone@randomhouse.com and we’ll post it right here on this blog, for others to coo and fawn over, of course.

Click here to check out the fabulous first set of photo submissions!

Gary Shteyngart wants to name a character in his next novel after you.

978-0-8129-7786-8That character is a dog. (We’re big Shteyn- gart fans, so trust us, you’d rather be one of his dogs than one of his people.)

Introducing The Super Happy Bookloving Dogs Contest, which is open to you and your customers, and yours to share via e-newsletters, Twitter, and your delightfully handsome websites.

How it works: send us a picture of yourself reading Super Sad True Love Story with a dog to bluestone@randomhouse.com, and we’ll post it here on Bluestone. One winner will be selected by the author, and Gary will name a dog in his next novel after the winner.

And just to make things a little more fun, here’s a lovely PDF of an essay that Gary wrote, with a shout-out to one of our favorite bookstores in Arizona. Like everything else on Bluestone, it’s yours to share away.

Gary and dog one gary and dog two

(Gary with his favorite weiner dog, Felix.)

Please note: we promise not to collect any of your customers’ e-mail addresses for our own evil promotional purposes. (We probably didn’t need to say it. It’s mostly the cat people who worry about stuff like that.)

The fine print is here. To check out the fabulous photo submissions, click here.

(Winner will be chosen based on artistic merit, which is highly subjective, so please don’t sue us if your picture isn’t chosen.)

NEWS FLASH! Deadline extended to Friday, August 19th.

We have been asked to extend the deadline of this contest, because some of Gary’s fans were traveling in the first part of the summer. (We’ve been to Gary’s events, so we’re pretty sure that even if they went to the beach, they’ll all still look bookish and pale in their photographs.)
